The Faith Academy of Marble Falls girls basketball team hosts its own tournament Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13-14.

The Lady Flames will meet Fredericksburg Heritage at 3 p.m. and Austin Waldorf at 5:30 p.m. both on Friday and Bulverde Gloria Deo at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Faith head coach Harvey Vaughn believes the tournament is coming at the right time.

“I think it’ll be helpful,” he said. “What’s more helpful is having four days of practice.”

The Lady Flames have been in the gym all week reviewing the playbook and zeroing in on the fundamentals, he said. He wants to see the players implement what they’ve been doing against an opponent.

“We can really hone in on the details of what they’re not doing,” he said. “The consistency of detail — I’m hoping to see us begin to limit our unforced turnovers. We’ll be a much better team. We play good enough defense.”

One point Vaughn is hoping begins to stick is to be patient on offense. He told his players it’s better to make three or four passes “and make the defense work” than to try to force a pass that gets deflected, stolen or turned over.

“They tend to look at their teammates and not the defender,” he said. “I tell them the defense is trying to make it look like she’s open. They’re learning on the fly. If we can (limit our turnovers), we’ll be a much better team.”

The coach said his players are in basketball shape and believes that will get better as they continue competing, especially since some may get no more than a minute of rest in each quarter.
